Homeowners should watch for signs of foundation problems

On behalf of Kadish & Associates Law Group posted in Construction Litigation on Thursday, June 21, 2018.

Foundation problems can instill fear in the heart of a homeowner. These can occur whether the home is brand new or a century old. The one thing that is universal in these cases is that the problem needs to be addressed right away. Homeowners might find that they are facing a financial issue with this because getting a foundation issue corrected can be an expensive endeavor.

Some of the more common signs of a foundation issue include doors or windows sticking and cracks on the walls, floors or ceilings. Other signs include sagging crawl spaces, bowing basement walls and leaning chimneys. Water damage and sagging porches can also signal an issue with the foundation.

When you notice any of these issues, it is time to have the foundation checked. Homeowners sometimes put this off because they are afraid of what they might find out. The problem might be as simple as fixing cracks in the foundation, but it could also be as involved as having to have the entire foundation replaced. Still, it is best to find out what options you have to save your home before the problem festers and gets worse and more costly.

One thing that some homeowners don’t realize is that there can sometimes be an issue with the contractor that leads the foundation not performing properly. These can be due to poor planning or to improper construction. In these cases, it is possible that the homeowner might be able to turn to the contractor to get corrections made. In some cases, legal action might be necessary.
