Signs of a bad contractor that you need to know

Trying to hire a contractor to do a construction project is a big undertaking. You have to be on the lookout for signs that you have someone who is going to do the job as you intend. One of the most important things to remember is that you might have to spend a little more to get a contractor who is going to do a good job.

Some contractors don't charge anything close to their competitors because they do subpar work, and they might not carry the necessary insurance. These individuals might not get the proper permits that are necessary for the job.

You need to make sure that you get a written agreement. The contract is the only thing that you have that binds them to the job at hand for the money you pay. Contractors who aren't reputable will try to bypass a written agreement.

Working with a contractor requires you to communicate with them. If you find that a potential contractor is having trouble with communication or that they are often late, you might need to bypass working with them even if they have a competitive bid. If you try to contact them and can't get a call back or they won't answer the phone, you probably shouldn't hire them.

Needing a big deposit upfront and using high pressure sales tactics are also signs that you don't need to work with a contractor. You want your project done by someone who will complete it as intended without going too far over your budget and without causing you additional problems. If you do hire a contractor who ends up breaking a contract, you do have legal options that you might opt to pursue.
